Jacqueline Newman - New York City Divorce Lawyer

Jacqueline Newman is an American family and matrimonial law lawyer.

Education and career

Newman graduated from a BA in sociology from the University of Delaware in 1996 and a JD from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 1999. While in law school she was recruited by Barry Berkman, who taught her in a matrimonial law class and Newman joined Berkman’s firm in 1998. She became a partner in the matrimonial law and divorce law firm in 2005 at the age of 31, and eventually a marquee partner, resulting in the firm’s renaming as Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein. She has worked as the hiring manager for the firm and is currently the Managing Partner. She has also taught seminars at The Center for Understanding Conflict in New York City, the Redwoods Initiative, as well as classes in matrimonial law at Fordham University School of Law.

Newman has been interviewed regarding common mistakes spouses make during divorce by publications including MSN.com and Woman’s Day, where she warned that using an attorney versed in family law instead of one specializing in a different form of law is important when choosing a divorce lawyer. In the Huffington Post Newman warned against the use of social media to berate one’s spouse during or after a divorce, in order to avoid unintended financial consequences. The Post also interviewed her regarding the strange things some couples argue over during divorce proceedings. In 2010 she was named one of the New York’s Women Leaders in the Law by New York Magazine and in 2012 she was a featured lawyer in Super Lawyers Magazine. She has also been featured on AOL on Business, where she discussed the use of prenuptial agreements and in Glamour Magazine.
